"The ultimate test of a moral
society is the kind of world
that it leaves to its children."
—Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945)

The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute

Mission

The mission of The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute (TDBI) is to form, support, and encourage ethical and morally courageous leaders to address the social crises of their time.

Vision

We imagine when rigorous ethical reflection is part of the normal process of religious, civic, and political engagement- and that such a process is, in part, informed by the life and thoughts of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In keeping with Bonhoeffer’s philosophy, such a process requires concrete outcomes aimed at benefitting all parties. We settle for nothing less than a just society infused with collaboration and equity.

Support Our Work

The foundation of ethical behavior is how the reality of the world and the reality of God are reconciled. Only together can we be a powerful source for long-term good by finding concrete solutions to ethical crises, conundrums, ambiguities, and dilemmas. We cannot do our work of transforming society without you.

A discussion about Bonhoeffer – his life, times, and thoughts – and how they relate today.

Our Work

The work of The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute is to promote the philosophy and moral theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in practical ways for today’s culture. Our programs are designed to provide direction for concrete action to turn ethical challenges into solutions. We also provide tools, recommended resources, commentary, opinion, and expert speakers that offer religious, moral, and ethical perspectives on the issues of the day.
